The course corresponds to 6 ECTS and therefore 54 total hours of lectures, exercises, project development and open discussion. This course aims to provide support to new engineers who will have to manage increasingly digitized production processes and plants, for which the new materials will play a key role in supporting communication with the outside world. The course will be organized in two main topics applied to explore several class of materials and their performances.

• Design approach: Materials’ criteria selection and rational design in product design and process optimization (theory and laboratory activities). Specific software will be used.
• Computer modelling: Computational Methods applied to Materials Science Molecular Dynamics, Monte Carlo, Multiscale approach by semiempirical methods.
• Fundamental to high performing materials in the digital factory: materials’ structure, crystals and amorphous, defects and correlation with principal material’s properties, models and interpretation. Smart structures, nanomaterials and nanotechnologies.
• Conductors, semiconductors and superconductors materials: mechanism and principal applications, intrinsic and not, doping mechanisms and impurities, crystals and related structures, technological processing. Interfaces, coating treatments, and surface engineering. Functionally graded materials with different interphases. Materials for Energy harvesting, solid state batteries.
• Optical materials, Magnetic and piezo electric materials: linear and non-linear optics, inorganic and organic materials for electronic (LASER, OFETs, OLEDs, OLETs, Organic materials based Solar cell, Dye-sensitized solar cells DSSCs etc)
• Smart materials and composites for extreme environmental condition such as high temperature (and/or pressure), biological and chemical risk.
• Rational design and Optimization of technologies applied to previous described class of materials

The course will consist of frontal class, exercitations by using dedicated software, project activity in collaborations with local and multinational enterprises and seminars from EU and USA colleagues.
